Full Description
October 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated fragmentary linear ditches, probably the remains of former field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Morton village (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 1252 1706. It is possible that many of these cropmarks relate to agricultural boundaries and enclosures of possible Iron Age to Roman date, although this is not certain. Finds of Iron Age and Roman date have been recovered from the general vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 29344, 29962, 25247), although no artefacts have been found in direct association with the actual cropmark site. The cropmarks follow a similar alignment to a series of ditched boundaries recorded approximately 500m to the west (NHER 50654) and it is possible that the two sites are broadly contemporary. Although undated, it is has been suggested that NHER 50654 is Roman in date, due to associated finds, see record for details.
The cropmarks appear to pre-date the medieval to post medieval date boundaries and fields, see NHER 50648 for details, although it remains a possibility remains that some of these linears relate to relatively recent drainage schemes, as evidence of such features was evident on the aerial photographs and omitted from the mapping.
S. Massey (NMP), 31 October 2007.
February-March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
This group of cropmarks fell entirely within the area examined. No corresponding anomalies were identified.
Information from draft report. See NHER 66314 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.
February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
A trench dug at TG 1255 1706 coincided with two of the cropmarks in this group. No associated remains were identified.
Information from draft report. See NHER 66314 for further details.
