Map

November 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of enclosures and boundary ditches of probable Late Saxon to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S7). A group of three north to south aligned parallel boundary ditch cropmarks are present to the north of St Mary's Church (NHER 2835). One of these continues the line of the former western boundary of the churchyard, which also formed the boundary to the park (NHER 50576) in the 17th century (S8). To the west of the churchyard are cropmarks of part of a possible double-ditched rectilinear enclosure. Adjacent cropmarks appear to define roads or tracks and further incomplete enclosures. These ditch cropmarks appear to partly correspond to a boundary shown on a 1624 map of Gressenhall (S8). It is likely that these enclosure and road cropmarks mainly relate to the late Saxon to medieval settlement of Gressenhall and that they had been cleared prior to the creation of the park. Pottery of Late Saxon to post medieval date has been recovered from this field (NHER 12588) and a possible Late Saxon manorial enclosure cropmark is located immediately to the north (NHER 25989). In the west of the group are a series of roughly northwest to southeast aligned ditch cropmarks arranged perpendicular to the modern field pattern. It is likely that these are field boundaries of medieval to post medieval date which either pre- or post-date the park.
