Summary

A road or track, which may be of medieval origin but survived extant until at least the 1940s, is visible as an extant feature, and subsequently as cropmarks and low earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. It is also depicted on a variety of 19th and 20th century maps.

Map

November 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval road or track are visible on aerial photographs ((S1)-(S4)). These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 18817. Curvilinear cropmarks are present for a distance of approximately 860m. They relate to the central section of a medieval to post medieval road or track that extended from Hoe church to near Drift Farm in Gressenhall parish. This road survived as a track and field boundary in 1946 (S4) and is marked on the second edition 6 inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S5). Consequently the cropmarks were not mapped by the Norfolk NMP.
J. Albone (NMP), 16 November 2007.

January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
Parts of the possibly medieval to modern road described above are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2017 (S6). The central section of the road shows as a very clear cropmark on Google Earth imagery from 2017 (S7). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is likely that any earthwork elements still survive.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 11 January 2024.
