Full Description
November 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of rectangular enclosures, field boundaries and a road of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs ((S1)-(S8)). These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 28281. A group of incomplete rectangular enclosures are located to the south of Hall Road. They appear to front on to the road and are likely to relate to crofts of medieval to post medieval date. To the south of the enclosures, linear ditch cropmarks define rectilinear and strip fields. These fields lay either side of a curving west to east aligned road that is defined by two parallel ditches. This road is marked on Faden’s 1797 county map (S9), but had gone by the time of Bryant’s map in 1826 (S10). The field boundaries partly correspond to those shown on the 1814 Hoe enclosure map (S11) and are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. Together with earthwork remains to the north and east (NHER 2810), this group of cropmarks relates to the shrunken medieval settlement of Hoe.
J. Albone (NMP), 16 November 2007.
January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
Some of the cropmarks described above, which relate to the medieval settlement of Hoe, are visible on Google Earth imagery from July 2006 (S12). Some of the features are also visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2017 (S13). In addition, ridge-like marks at the southern end of the site, visible as cropmarks on the Google Earth imagery, could relate to the remains of former strip fields.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 January 2024.
