October-November 1995. Watching Brief.
Undertaken during topsoil stripping for quarry extension. Contexts 3 and 4.
Two features were identified within the stripped area. A ditch running north-south was later identified as a field boundary removed in 1976. A truncated pit was also recorded and was found to contain pottery thought to be of possible Early to Middle Iron Age date.
See report (S1) for further details.
H. Wallis (NAU), 12 February 1996.
September 2006. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey. Contexts 1-98 used.
A total of 29 worked flints were recovered. Just under half of the flint assemblage comprised unmodified flint flakes likely to date from the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age. The remainder included two cores, a single scraper and a small blade. A fine example of a plano-convex knife was also found, and is likely to be of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. An elongated leaf-shaped arrowhead is thought to date to the earlier Neolithic period.
Eight sherds of pottery were recovered, including a single Roman sherd, one medieval sherd and six pieces of post medieval pottery. Post medieval ceramic building material was also found.
Eighteen metal objects were recorded, including a medieval jetton, a medieval vessel rim, a medieval armorial horse pendant and a post medieval cloth seal.
See report (S2) for further details.

A. Cattermole (NLA), 11 December 2007. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 May 2019.
September-October 2006. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of 29 trenches. Contexts 100-165.
A single north-south aligned ditch was dated to the Roman period as it contained 24 sherds of Roman pottery.
Early Saxon remains include a probable sunken featured building (grubenhaus), measuring at least 2m in length and 4m wide. 24 sherds of Early Saxon pottery were recovered from the fill of this irregular feature, including fabric from four vessels, with one rim showing signs of sooting. The pottery fabric and form suggest a date in the 6th century or later, and the vessels present are typical for a domestic assemblage of this date. A sample from the fill of this feature was found to contain wheat and barley grains, burnt bone and fired or burnt fired clay. A post hole was excavated within the south-western part of the sunken featured building and samples taken from its fill produced cereal grains, charcoal, burnt or fired clay and vitrified material. To the west of the possible sunken featured building the terminus of a probable linear ditch or pit was recorded, but it was not possible to date this feature.
Post medieval remains comprised field boundary ditches, many of which are visible on 18th to 20th century maps.
Undated features comprised linear ditches. Although it was not possible to date these features, they clearly indicate that livestock management activities have taken place within this area. One of the recorded linear features coincides with a cropmark visible on a photograph taken by the RAF in 1946.
