Summary

A possible small embanked enclosure of unknown date is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946. Its origin and function are unknown, but given its relatively low-lying position – at the head of a now largely dry valley, marked by a line of ponds – an association with drainage, stock management, or agricultural activity such as hay-making seems probable. Alternatively, the site formerly lay within Lida’s Wood (shown on an historic Ordnance Survey map), and could therefore relate to woodland management. Recent aerial photographs indicate that the earthworks have since been levelled.

Map

A possible small embanked enclosure of unknown date is visible as earthworks, and later cropmarks, on aerial photographs (S1-3), centred at TG 2970 1452. Its origin and function are unknown, but given its relatively low-lying position – at the head of a now largely dry valley, marked by a line of ponds – an association with drainage, stock management, or agricultural activity such as hay-making seems probable. Alternatively, the site formerly lay within Lida’s Wood (shown on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (S4)), and could therefore relate to woodland management. In either case, its survival into the 20th century as an earthwork would suggest a medieval and/or post medieval date. At the same time, the archaeological significance of the earthworks is not entirely certain, and they could be of relatively recent origin. Recent aerial photographs indicate that the earthworks have since been levelled.

The postulated enclosure is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and measures approximately 23m long and 19m wide.
