Full Description
December 2007. Norfolk NMP
Earthworks and soilmarks of field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). A group of small rectilinear fields were present between Setch Road at Blackborough End and Puny Drain to its south. The fields, which were defined by earthwork ditches, vary in size from 16m by 27m to 68m by 85m. Although the field pattern represented by the earthworks is broadly similar to the surviving pattern very few of these field boundaries are shown on the 1838 Middleton tithe map (S3). It is likely that they are earlier in date and they are probably of medieval to early post medieval origin. The earthworks were located in areas of pasture in 1946 (S1). These fields had been ploughed and the earthworks levelled by 1971 (S2). Further field boundary earthworks is similar type are also visible on aerial photographs to the north (NHER 50750) of this site.
