NHER 50750 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Earthworks of medieval to post medieval field boundaries

Earthworks of field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These field boundaries have a broadly similar alignment to the modern field pattern but they are not marked on the 1838 Middleton tithe map (S2). It is likely that they are of medieval to post medieval date. On the eastern side of this group of earthworks are two adjoining enclosures defined by 2m wide ditches. One of these contains a small roughly square ditched enclosure measuring 7m internally. These enclosures are located on the opposite side of Water Land to a medieval moat earthwork (NHER 3429). It is possible that they are of medieval date and that they are related to the moat site. Earthworks of ridge and furrow have previously been recorded in this area (NHER 22143), but these were not visible on the available aerial photographs.
