NHER 50751 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated rectilinear and curvilinear enclosures

A soilmark of an undated rectilinear enclosure within a curvilinear enclosure is visible on aerial photographs (S1). A slightly trapezoidal enclosure is present as a soilmark. It is defined by a narrow ditch and has external dimensions of 29m by 26m. A sub-square pit measuring approximately 5m across is visible within the enclosure. The enclosure is located on a small gravel island adjacent to the palaeochannel of a former tributary of the River Nar. The island is partly surrounded by a ditch soilmark, creating a curvilinear enclosure. A break in the ditch, marked by a 9m diameter sub-circular pit, is present on the northeast side of the possible outer enclosure. The date and function of this enclosure is unclear, but it is perhaps most likely that it is of Roman or medieval to post medieval origin.
