Summary

Earthworks of a possible medieval moat are visible on aerial photographs. Shallow ditch earthworks are visible as water-filled depressions in an arable field immediately to the north of Park Farm, Wormegay. Although the visible depressions are discontinuous, they appear to mark the line of ditches forming a rectangular enclosure. It is possible that Park Farm is the site of a medieval manor.

Full Description

December 2007. Norfolk NMP
Earthworks of a possible medieval moat are visible on aerial photographs (S1). Shallow ditch earthworks are visible as water-filled depressions in an arable field immediately to the north of Park Farm, Wormegay. Although the visible depressions are discontinuous, they appear to mark the line of ditches forming a rectangular enclosure with internal dimensions of approximately 60m by 34m. It is possible that this enclosure is a medieval moat, perhaps relating to a precursor to the present Park Farm. It has been suggested that Park Farm is the site of an earlier manor (See NHER 3457 for discussion) and Bryant's 1826 county map (S2) labels it as 'Park Farm and Manor Ho'. The enclosure is not marked on the Wormegay tithe map of 1838 (S3) or any later maps. A pond is shown within the area of the enclosure on the first edition 6 inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S4). This feature was still extant in 1946 (S5) but was not mapped by the NMP.
