Summary

Linear ditches of unknown date, but perhaps representing post medieval field boundaries and drainage ditches, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. They lie to the north and south of Buxton Road, crossing a spur of land between the River Bure to the northeast and a smaller tributary to the south. Some of the features in the southern portion of the site appear to feed into the latter – now a largely dry valley – suggesting a function relating to drainage. Others follow the same broad alignment as the field pattern depicted on 19th and 20th century maps, and may represent field boundaries of slightly earlier date. There is no evidence that any date to any earlier than the post medieval period, although finds of prehistoric, medieval and post medieval date have been recovered from the vicinity (NHER 25955 and 32992).

Map

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditches of unknown date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2529 2010. They perhaps represent field boundaries and drainage ditches dating to the post medieval period. They are visible either side of Buxton Road, crossing a spur of land between the River Bure to the northeast and a smaller tributary to the south. Some of the features in the southern portion of the site appear to feed into the latter – now a largely dry valley – suggesting a function relating to drainage. Others follow the same broad alignment as the field pattern depicted on 19th and 20th century maps, and may represent former field boundaries established in preceding centuries. There is no evidence that any date to any earlier than the post medieval period, although finds of prehistoric, medieval and post medieval date have been recovered from the vicinity (NHER 25955 and 32992).

February-March 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site of proposed quarry extension.
This survey identified a series of linear anomalies likely to represent field boundary ditches including two west-north-west to east-south-east aligned features and one north-to-south aligned feature that correspond with cropmarks in this group.
See report (S2) and NHER 69902 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2026.

April 2022. Strip, Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation ahead of aggregate extraction.
The work exposed several ditches, included a number of ditches, including two the corresponded with the cropmarks that coincided with the stripped area. No dating evidence was recovered from these features, although elements of this field system previously investigated to the west were found to contain medieval pottery.
See NHER 69902 for further details.
