Summary

An undated ring ditch visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs probably represents the site of a Bronze Age round barrow. Although it is only visible on one set of aerial photographs, the site is relatively convincing as an archaeological feature. It occupies a fairly prominent position, between the River Bure to its northeast and a smaller tributary to its south. While no dating evidence has been recovered from the site itself, a Bronze Age palstave has been found nearby (NHER 25955). Therefore, although ring ditches might be associated with a variety of sites of different types and dates, the interpretation of the example described here as a prehistoric burial mound seems most probable.

Map

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
An undated ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2550 2004. It probably represents the site of a Bronze Age round barrow. Although it is only visible on one set of aerial photographs, the site is relatively convincing as an archaeological feature, the cropmark being similar in appearance to those of undated linear ditches visible in the western half of the same field (NHER 50757). The ring ditch occupies a fairly prominent position, between the River Bure to its northeast and a smaller tributary to its south. While no dating evidence has been recovered from the site itself, a palstave dating to the Middle Bronze Age has been found nearby (NHER 25955). Therefore, although ring ditches might be associated with a variety of sites of different types and dates, the interpretation of the example described here as a prehistoric burial mound seems most probable.

The ring ditch is broadly circular in plan and measures approximately 37m in diameter. A break in its eastern side is as likely to represent the cropmark being masked as the presence of a genuine causeway.
