Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, possibly representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs within arable to the southwest of Lyng village. A second possible ring ditch may also be visible to the east, although this is less convincing. The site is located near the top of the valley side overlooking the River Wensum. This positioning is mirrored by other Bronze Age barrows to the north of the river (see NHER 50639).

Map

October 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, possibly representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs within arable land to the southwest of Lyng village (S1). The site is centred on TG 0642 1773. A second possible ring ditch may also be visible to the east, although this is less convincing. The site is located near the top of the valley side overlooking the River Wensum. This positioning is mirrored by other Bronze Age barrows to the north of the river, see NHER 50639).

The ring ditch is located at TG 0640 1772 and is slightly oval in plan, measuring approximately 14m by 17m (S1). The second, smaller and less convincing, ring ditch is potentially located approximately 40m to the east, at TG 0645 1774. However this feature has not been mapped due to the uncertainty over the origin of the cropmark, which could be geological.
