Full Description
October 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of two or three possible Bronze Age round barrows may be visible on aerial photographs from 1946 in the northeastern corner of Sparham Common (S1). The site is centred on TG 0758 1800. The area of this site has since been destroyed by aggregate extraction and is now Sparham Pools. Two other barrows have been identified on the ground within the common (NHER 3021-2). The site is located on the valley floor to the north of the River Wensum.
The clearest of the possible mounds is located at TG 0756 1803 and measures 12.5m across. The northern part of the mound appears to be slighted by a track in 1946. Another possible mound may be visible at TG 0762 1800, 12m across. The least convincing mound us much smaller, 6m across, and located at TG 0758 1798. None of these mounds were actually added to the NMP mapping layer due to the uncertainty over their archaeological origin. Given the height and clarity of the 1946 photography combined with the heathland vegetation none of these identifications can be made with any certainty.
S. Massey (NMP), 22 October 2007.
