Summary

The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the Mill Farm, Elsing. The archaeological origin of these cropmarks is not certain and it is possible that the features are the result of the underlying soils and geology affecting the crop.

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the Mill Farm, Elsing (S2-S4), although the evidence is not conclusive. The site is centred on TG 0538 1755. Finds such as prehistoric flints and pottery dating to the Roman, medieval and post medieval periods have been found in the vicinity of this ring ditch (NHER 13731 and 18242).

The ring ditch measures 11m in diameter. This site is located within an area of geological and pedological cropmarks and it is possible that the ring ditch is in fact the product of a non-archaeological feature also. However the positioning of the ring ditch on the upper slopes of a wide spur of land overlooking the Wensum Valley to the north mirrors the positioning of other more convincing ring ditches and round barrows recorded in the area, such as NHER 12150 and 3053.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2007.
