Full Description
January 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated and multi-period fragmentary rectilinear enclosures and linear ditches, probably representing the remains of former field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the east and west of Gallows Lane, on the border of the Lyng and Elsing parishes (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 0593 1614. The date of these features is not certain, although it is possible that some of these features are Roman in date. The majority of the finds recovered in the general vicinity of these cropmarks are medieval to post medieval in date, although NHER 37115 contains some Roman date material.
The cropmarks are all quite fragmentary but would appear to indicate two possible areas of small rectilinear enclosures, at approximately TG 0581 1599 and TG 05831623. The remainder of the cropmarks consist of fragmentary single and double linear ditches and these are likely to represent the remains of former field boundaries and trackways.
