Summary

A magnetometer survey revealed evidence of a palaeochannel and several linear features which may be of archaeological origin. A subsequently trial trench evaluation revealed a number of archaeologically significant features including several pits and six gullies, although unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. It is however possible that at least some of the pits were Neolithic, as two were sealed by the Nordelph peat. The gullies were most likely the remains of post-medieval drainage ditches.

January-February 2008. Trial Trenching.
Eighteen 30m trenches were excavated prior to development of a water treatment area and a drainage ditch.
A number of pits were discovered in the northern section of the site, two of which are of particular interest as they are sealed by the Nordelph peat, suggesting that these features date to the Neolithic period. No finds were recovered so it is possible the pits are of natural origin.
Six gullies were identified, all orientated NE-SW. These are likely to be the remains of post-medieval drainage ditches.
See report (S4) for further details.
