On the north-west boundary of Horstead and extending into the hamlet of Meyton, a weekly market was held on Fridays, and an annual fair was held on 6th November. This market lay near the road leading from Frettenham church to Meyton Hall. Both market and fair, called Cakeroo, Cakerow, and later, Carrow, may date back to the 13th century. The fairground and a portion of the market were situated in Meyton. The other portion overflowed into Cakeroo Furlong. The market consisted of a row or rows of shops, as its name implies. The existence of these shops is recorded in the Horstead Manorial Survey of 1586, in which they are described as shoppes edificati, thus suggesting permanent or semi-permanent structures.
