Summary

Excavations by King's Lynn Archaeological Society in 2006 recovered various finds including a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade and Late Saxon and medieval pottery. A number of the Late Saxon Thetford-type ware sherds showed signs of being either wasters or seconds. A layer of soot exposed during the excavation is however most likely a relatively recent deposit.

Map

Before 19 July 2007. Informal excavation by King's Lynn Archaeological Society.
Finds from a trench measuring approximately 2m x 1.5m and 0.75m. Beer bottle and rag in upper part, layer of soot at about 0.45m and below. Most finds from between beer bottle and soot at depth of approximately 0.45m. See photographs in file. Finds recovered included:
1 undatable prehistoric flint flake.
1 Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade (found at depth of 75cm).
38 Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery sherds. Including some discoloured and distorted sherds that may be kiln debris.
4 medieval unglazed pottery sherds.
1 undatable slag fragment, cockle shells, oyster shells, fired clay/abraded brick fragments and animal bones and teeth (probably rabbit and pig).
See descriptions in file.
The current owners have been told that a previous owner of the property dug a hole here and deposited soot from the chimney on a regular basis during the 1960s and 1970s, some of which was reused on the garden. This is very probably the sooty layer discovered during informal excavations above.
E. Darch (NLA), 19 July 2007.
