The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of the Billingford Road, North Elmham (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 0025 2015 and is located on the lowlying land in-between the River Wensum and the Black Water channel. This low-lying setting is relatively unusual for a barrow, although other examples are known from alongside the River Wensum to the east. This site sits on the end of a spur of sand and gravel that projects into the clays and silts of valley floor.
The ring ditch measures 24m in diameter with a relatively broad ditch, 1.5 to 2.5m wide. The ring ditch is bisected by a drainage channel.
S. Massey (NMP), 14 February 2008.
