Full Description
January 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2975 1654. Its date and function are unknown. If it is a genuine archaeological feature, it could represent the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, although the area is not notable for prehistoric funerary monuments. More probably, it could mark the site of a round house of later prehistoric or Roman date, perhaps associated with the multi-phase field systems that surround it. Specifically, it could be contemporary with NHER 50714 for which a similar date range is likely, although elements of this group of field boundaries and trackways appear to overlap with it. At the same time, it should be noted that the ring ditch is only faintly visible on the consulted aerial photographs, and the possibility that it is of geological or recent agricultural origin cannot be ruled out.
The ring ditch is only partly visible, but appears to be circular in plan, verging towards oval. It has a diameter of approximately 11m.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 January 2008.
March 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
A number of archaeological significant anomalies were identified, the majority of which appear to relate to previously identified cropmark features. There was however no trace of this ring ditch. It was though noted that the anomalies detected in this part of the site were very weak in nature and as a result other, undetected features may well be present.
See report (S4) and NHER 61655 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 October 2016.
August 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
A trench placed across the locaton of this ring-ditch revealed no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See report (S5) and NHER 61655 for further details.
