Full Description
January 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A group of linear and curvilinear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2629 1432. Their date and origin are unknown. They could represent archaeological features, perhaps related to the complex, multi-period cropmarks visible a short distance to their north (NHER 50802). They occupy, however, a site on low-lying ground, close to a former watercourse followed by the parish boundary. This, together with their general character and orientation, suggests that like other (unmapped) cropmarks visible in the same area, they could instead represent drains or similarly mundane agricultural features of relatively recent origin.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 30 January 2008.
April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 40).
Although the area examined coincided with the southernmost two cropmarks in this group there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S3) and NHER 49747 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 February 2021.
April-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field S16).
Trenches excavated across the lines of the southernmost two cropmarks revealed no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See report (S4) and NHER 49747 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 23 February 2021.
January-September 2016. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation of site on route of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Area 10).
The area investigated coincided with the north-west to south-east aligned cropmark at TG 2637 1419, which was again found to have no associated sub-surface remains.
See NHER 49747 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 April 2021.
