Map

January 2008. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a field system and field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). A group of ditch cropmarks are present defining at least four rectilinear fields are present. Three fields are sufficiently complete for their dimensions to be determined. These measure 147m by 90m, 160m by 72m and 180m by 118m internally. Other incomplete fields appear to adjoin these and the full extent of the field system is not known. The field system cropmarks are cut diagonally by the former parish boundary between Ashwicken and Leziate (S2), which is now represented by a farm track and field boundary. It is possible that the field system predates the parish boundary and that it has an early origin, perhaps being of Roman or Saxon in date. Cutting across the field system cropmarks are linear ditch cropmarks on roughly west to east and north to south alignments. It is likely that these are field boundaries but their date is unknown. Further linear and curvilinear ditch cropmarks of probable post medieval origin are present on a west northwest to east southeast alignment parallel to a former railway line (NHER 13600).
