NHER 50843 (Monument record) - Field boundary and enclosure cropmarks

Cropmarks of field boundaries, drainage ditches and enclosures of unknown, medieval and post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). Linear ditch cropmarks are present on a variety of different alignments within the group. Only one of these, a roughly west to east aligned ditch that cuts through the centre of the group, relates to a field boundary marked on the first edition 6 inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S2). At least eight ditches share a broadly southwest to northeast alignment and are likely to relate to field boundaries of similar date with other boundaries lying perpendicular to them. Two incomplete rectilinear enclosures are present in the eastern part of the group of cropmarks. The first of the enclosures lies on a southwest to northeast axis similar to that of the field boundary cropmarks. It measures 44m wide by at least 34m long, and possibly extends up to 96m. The second enclosure lies on a more west to east axis and has internal dimensions of 62m by at least 28m. In addition to the field boundary marked on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey map it is likely that some of the other ditches are field boundaries and drainage ditches of unknown, medieval to post medieval date. Although one of the possible enclosures appears to be contemporary with the field boundaries, the other is of unknown date. Artefacts of Roman and later date have been recovered from the area of these cropmarks (NHER 30297). The proximity of these cropmarks to the site of Mintlyn church (NHER 3410) may mean that some elements relate to medieval settlement activity.
