Full Description
January 2008. Norfolk NMP
A group of three possible earthwork mounds, perhaps relating to a medieval to post medieval rabbit warren, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). Three possible mounds are faintly visible as low earthworks on an area of former heathland called Leziate Warren (S3). All three of the mounds have an irregular curvilinear plan and are surrounded by a narrow ditch. They measure between 25m and 32m long by 20m to 23m wide and have a low flat-topped form. The shape of these mounds is too irregular for them to be interpreted as prehistoric barrows. It is possible that they are mounds associated with a medieval to early post medieval rabbit warren. One of the mounds appears to overlie the earthworks of the medieval hollow ways on this part of Leziate Warren (NHER 50850) which may indicate an early date for the route across the heath. By 1992 the central and western mounds had been destroyed by quarrying (S4). The eastern mound was not clearly visible at that date.
