Summary

The cropmarks of a possible enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Mill House Farm, North Elmham. The archaeological origin and significance of site is uncertain and it is possible that cropmarks are the result of the underlying soils, geology and natural drainage features. If the enclosure is of archaeological origin then a late prehistoric date is possible given the morphology of the site.

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of boundaries and drainage ditches dating from the Roman to post medieval periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the River Wensum at Billingford (S1). The site is centred on TG 0005 2030. The archaeological origin and significance of the site is uncertain and it is possible that cropmarks are the result of the underlying soils, geology and natural drainage features. If the enclosure is of archaeological origin then a late prehistoric date is possible given the morphology of the site.
The possible enclosure measures 47m by 25m and is broadly rectilinear or polygonal in plan, with an irregular ditch. To the immediate north and west of the possible enclosure is what appears to be a sinuous and irregular channel presumably a former drainage creek. The similarity of the irregular ditch plan to the creek would strongly suggest that the ‘enclosure’ is in fact a number of linked drainage channels.
S. Massey (NMP), 28 February 2007.
