Summary

The cropmarks of possible fragmentary ditches, potentially representing the remains of former field boundaries of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Riverside Farm, Swanton Morley. There is some doubt over the archaeological origin of these cropmarks and it is felt that they could have been caused by agricultural activity in the field. It is possible that these cropmarks, if they are archaeological, date to the Iron Age, as they show no obvious relationship with any of the Roman sites in the area (NHER 17486). A number of Iron Age finds have been found in the general vicinity.

Map

The cropmarks of possible fragmentary ditches, potentially representing the remains of former field boundaries of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Riverside Farm, Swanton Morley (S1). The site is centred on TG 0092 1928.

There is some doubt over the archaeological origin of these cropmarks and it is felt that they could have been caused by agricultural activity in the field. The cropmarks may represent an unusual ‘envelope’ pattern created by the quarry pits in the field necessitated an abnormal ploughing method. It is possible that these cropmarks, if they are archaeological, date to the Iron Age, as they show no obvious relationship with any of the Roman sites in the area (NHER 17486).
