Map

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, possibly the remains of field boundaries of Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Short Lane, Billingford (S1). The site is centred on TG 0105 2109. A Roman date for these cropmarks has been suggested due to the site's proximity to the Roman town of Billingford (NHER 7206) and the shared alignment of these features with the boundaries and enclosures forming the northern part of the settlement. It must be noted that the boundaries do also share a similar alignment to the medieval to post medieval field layout, but the relationship with Short Lane would probably indicate that these are earlier features.
A small ring ditch (NHER 29827) to the immediate west of the ditches has been interpreted as a possible roundhouse, although this is not certain; it may represent a former barrow.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2007.
