Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 2007 and 2024 recovered Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, medieval and medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval ceramic roof tile fragment; undatable copper alloy casting waste; Late Iron Age, Late Iron Age/Roman (Roman issue), Roman and medieval to post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval tokens; medieval to post-medieval jettons and a range of other, Iron Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include an Iron Age possible terret; an Iron Age/Roman unidentified copper alloy object; Late Iron Age/Roman brooches and a terret; Roman brooches and a military apron mount; a possible Roman furniture fitting, steelyard arm and lead steelyard weight; numerous Early Saxon brooch fragments (including a silver square-headed example), wrist clasps, girdle hangers, a strap end, belt or strap mount and pendant; Middle/Late Saxon hooked tags; Late Saxon strap ends; a Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorl; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval harness mounts, thimbles, keys, knife fragments, tweezers, a harness pendant, mount, suspension unit/holder for lamp or censer, copper alloy pilgrim badge, copper alloy unidentified objects, copper alloy ring, lead ampullas, lead spindle whorl, lead seal matrix, lead weight, lead possible pilgrim souvenir, monumental brass fragment and iron rowel spur; medieval/post-medieval rumbler bell, purse bar, whittle-tang knife handle, furniture stud, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy rings, lead weights and lead spindle whorl and post-medieval crotal bells, thimbles, furniture fittings, harness mounts, a belt or harness mount, rotary key, mount, mount or stud, coin weight, spoon, spur, tap, hasp, scale-tang knife end cap, toy watch fragment, copper alloy and lead weights; lead cloth seals, lead powder flask caps and pewter toy watch. The range and quantity of the Early Saxon finds strongly suggest this is the location of an inhumation cemetery.

The Early Saxon square-headed brooch was declared Treasure on 22 February 2008 (case 2008 T14), and subsequently acquired by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2009.115.1). A second, joining fragment of this brooch was found in July 2008 (see below).
