Summary

This site was subject to a desk-based assessment prior to development. Wood Farm occupies a relatively elevated position between two tributaries of the River Bure. Bronze Age and Roman occupation has been recorded in the immediate area, while known Saxon and medieval activity is focused further north-east, near the settlement of Marsham. The date at which buildings appeared on the site remains uncertain, but a farmhouse and associated outbuildings are depicted on the 1840 Tithe Map. The majority of the extant buildings are of modern construction, but the brick-built barn closest to the road may have been built in the early 19th century. A geophysical survey conducted in February 2009 detected a number of potential archaeological features including possible pits and ditches, which could relate to a large field system shown on aerial photograph.

Map

July-August 2007. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
Observations of the existing structures at this site during a visit on 6 July 2007 indicate that the red brick barn was originally constructed as a cottage with an attached barn. This structure likely dates to the early 19th century, and may be the building depicted on the 1840 Tithe map (S1), but this has not been confirmed.
See report (S2) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 25 February 2008.

February 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey of proposed development area.
The survey detected a number of potential archaeological features including possible pits and ditches, which could relate to a large field system shown on aerial photographs. It is possible that the observed ditch features could be roadside ditches.
See report (S3) for further details.
S. Howard (NLA), 6 November 2009.
