Summary

The soilmarks of a group of medieval to post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs within the arable land within Bylaugh Park (NHER 30496). It is possible that these relate to the medieval settlement thought to be located to the immediate east of this area (NHER 11524) that pre-dates the establishment of the Park. The slightly curving bank and ditched boundaries may have originated from ridge and furrow or similar open field type farming techniques.

Map

March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a group of medieval to post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) within the arable land within Bylaugh Park (NHER 30496). The site is centred on TG 0306 1875. It is possible that these relate to the medieval settlement thought to be located to the immediate east of this area (NHER 11524) that pre-dates the establishment of the Park. The slightly curving bank and ditched boundaries may have originated from ridge and furrow or similar open field type farming techniques.

The western edge of the site is demarcated by a curving boundary that is still in use on the 1840 Bylaugh Tithe map (S3). Other boundaries visible on aerial photographs relate more closely to post medieval boundaries recorded on the historic maps and were therefore omitted from the mapping.
