Full Description
March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The possible cropmarks of an undated ditch may be visible on aerial photographs (S1) within the Police House Field cropmark site (NHER 50591). The site is centred on TF 6328 1088. This site forms the northern part of the late Iron Age to Roman settlement at Watlington (NHER 39458) and has been excavated as part of NHER 39457. However no corresponding archaeological feature was recorded during the excavations (full details to follow, see NHER 39457) and it is possible that this cropmark is agricultural in origin. It is possible that the feature represented a shallow and ephemeral linear ditch or hollow that has since been truncated by the plough or was indistinguishable from the surrounding natural. However the fact that the cropmark is only clearly visible on one set of aerial photographs, combined with its absence during the excavations, would tend to suggest that it is not of archaeological origin.
The possible ditch runs intermittently for approximately 150m. The western end appears to be up to 3m wide, and the eastern end showing a two narrow close-set ditches.
S. Massey (NMP), 05 March 2008.
