Map

March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of field boundaries and possible enclosures ranging in date from the later prehistoric to Roman periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Gravelpit Plantation, Tottenhill (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 6342 1183 and has since been lost to aggregate extraction.

Finds of prehistoric and medieval date have been found within the wider area surrounding the site (NHER 23238, 23202, 22702). These perhaps indicate an area of prehistoric occupation, potentially Neolithic or Bronze Age in date, to the immediate west of the cropmarks (NHER 23238). However it is unclear how, if at all, this possible occupation relates to the cropmarks.

The site consists of dispersed and fragmentary ditches and former field boundaries. Several of the boundaries are double ditched and may therefore represent the remains of trackways, possibly associated with fields. At TF 6350 1164 is a possible cluster of rectilinear ditched features and boundaries, possibly indicating a more heavily subdivided area, perhaps indicative of an enclosure. However it must be stated that these cropmarks were located on the far ground of an oblique aerial photograph (S2) and within an area of geological cropmarks and therefore the identification of these particular features as archaeological is uncertain. Any cropmarks appearing to relate to post medieval field boundaries depicted on historic maps have been omitted from the mapping.
