Map

March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of field boundaries and enclosures ranging in date from the later prehistoric to Roman periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the Lynn Road at the Spinney, Tottenhill (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 6386 1166 and the majority of the site has since been lost to aggregate extraction, with only the extreme southern tip surviving.

Finds in close proximity to the site are limited, with only two Palaeolithic hand axes being found within the gravel workings (NHER 22702). The morphology of the cropmarks would suggest a later prehistoric to Roman date for these features. A group of similarly aligned fragmentary field boundaries have been recorded to the immediate west (NHER 50952), although these are again undated.

The site consists of dispersed and fragmentary ditches and former field boundaries. Several of the boundaries are double ditched and may therefore represent the remains of trackways, possibly associated with fields. Within the central and northern parts of the site these boundaries converge to suggest the presence of rectilinear enclosures, although the cropmarks are too fragmentary to be certain.

it must be stated that some of these cropmarks, those mapped from (S3) were located in the extreme far ground of the oblique aerial photograph and therefore the identification of these particular features as archaeological is uncertain.
