Summary

A multi-period cropmark site consisting of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of several phases of field boundaries ranging in date from the later prehistoric to Roman periods, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Lynn Road and to the north of Whin Common, Tottenhill. Cropmarks within the area of this site that appeared to form coherent groups or phases have been recorded separately (NHER 50923, 50953-4).

Map

March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A multi-period cropmark site consisting of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of several phases of field boundaries ranging in date from the later prehistoric to Roman periods, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Lynn Road and to the north of Whin Common, Tottenhill. (S1-S6). The site is centred on TG 6385 1162 and much of the site has since been lost to aggregate extraction. Cropmarks within the area of this site that appeared to form coherent groups or phases have been recorded separately (NHER 50923, 50953-4).

The site consists of dispersed and fragmentary ditches and former field boundaries. Several of the boundaries are double ditched and may therefore represent the remains of trackways, possibly associated with fields. There is a concentration of fragmentary ditch cropmarks at TF 6380 1142, some of these features may form part of a small group of fields, however the palimpsest nature of the cropmarks in this area makes it hard to interpret any of the features further.

A number of the cropmarks mapped to towards the southeastern part of the site run broadly to one another and it is possible that there are in fact relatively modern drainage channels, but the evidence was not conclusive. However it must be stated that these cropmarks were located on the far ground of an oblique aerial photograph (S6) and within an area of geological cropmarks and therefore the identification of these particular features as archaeological is uncertain. Any cropmarks appearing to relate to post medieval field boundaries depicted on historic maps have been omitted from the mapping.
