Full Description
March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible late prehistoric to Roman date enclosures and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs in-between the Stoke Road and the Watlington Road, Tottenhill (S1-S3). It is possible that this site represents a small farmstead and associated fields. This site is centred on TF 6484 1025. Finds of a Bronze Age, Roman, medieval to post medieval date have been found within the general vicinity of the site (NHER 3438, 44102, 28853) and the site is located approximately 1.5km from the late Iron Age to Roman settlement at Watlington (NHER 39458). Cropmarks within the area of this site that would appear to represent a later phase, either Roman or medieval to post medieval in date have been recorded separately (NHER 50938, 50958). Cropmarks relating to relatively late post medieval field boundaries have been omitted from the mapping.
The main concentration of cropmark features is located to the north of site at TF 6473 1035 (S1). The cropmarks would appear to indicate a rectilinear enclosure complex, covering an area approximately 110m across, with numerous internal subdivisions. A small sub-rectangular enclosure, measuring 31m by 23m, is most clearly defined component. Within the extreme southeastern part of the site is a small rectangular enclosure, 17m by 10m. The remainder of the site consists of dispersed fragmentary ditches following the same alignment (roughly NW-SE or NE-SW) and it is likely that these represent associated agricultural fields.
The site is located adjacent to and slightly overlooking the end of a probable channel, which is linked to a former area of peat fen to the east.
