Summary

A small depression and corresponding spoil pit identified during an earthwork survey of Sheringham Wood in 2008. This pit may be an undeveloped extraction pit. However, its location provides good views of the landscape to the north and it therefore may have been dug as a military trench, connected with the World War Two activity in Oak Wood to the north (NHER 38264).

Map

January 2007. Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Sheringham Wood Site 16:
A small depression measuring 5m by 2m and 0.5m deep was identified during a rapid earthwork survey of Sheringham Wood. A spoil mound of similar proportions was also located to the north of the site. The trench provides a good view to the north, and as such may have been a military trench connected with the World War Two activity in Oak Wood to the north (NHER 38264). Alternatively, the depression may be an undeveloped extraction pit.
