Summary

A series of parallel earthworks identified during a survey of Brettenham Heath. The earthworks are parallel to the A11, and in part follow the Brettenham/Bridgham parish boundary. The function of the earthworks remains uncertain, but they may represent a former trackway, a section of the parish boundary, or World War Two defensive positions.

November 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of braided tracks or earlier routes of a road of at least post medieval date, with probable earlier medieval origins, are visible on aerial photographs alongside the Brettenham/Bridgham parish boundary (S2-S13). The site is centred on TL 9265 8649 and consists of a series of parallel banks and hollows to the south of the A11 road. Although it is most likely that these earthworks relate to earlier routes of the A11 or Turnpike Road, visible on the Tithe Maps (S14-S15), which cuts across a large area of heath, it is feasible that some of the earthworks relate boundaries demarcating the parish boundary, which runs to the south of this route; although the slightly irregular and braided nature of the earthworks makes this unlikely. These earthworks have not been mapped as part of the NMP due to the likelihood that they represent relatively temporary post medieval tracks, in a similar way to those recorded just over 1km to the west (NHER 53461) rather their presence has been recorded.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 Nov 2010.
