Summary

Earthwork bank which divides the section of the heath administered by Kelling parish from that administered by Salthouse parish, although both sections lie within the modern Kelling civil parish. Noted by R Harris (NCC) who believed it to be ancient; local people stated it was of recent date but the section cut off by the railway indicates that it dates to before the late 19th century.

Map

Earthwork bank. Followed by present land boundary across heath on zigzag course from northwest entrance, south to the road and on to the railway. (S1) shows it continuing beyond the railway to meet a trackway, this section no longer exists probably due to the wartime airstrip HER 23129. The bank divides the section of the heath administered by Kelling parish from that administered by Salthouse parish, although both sections lie within the modern Kelling civil parish. Noted by R Harris NCC who believed it to be ancient; local people stated it was of recent date but the section cut off by the railway indicates that it dates before the late 19th century. (S2) shows no such feature but if the heathland was not tithable it may well have been omitted.
Compare HER 42849 marked as crossing this bank – could this be a confusion and both monuments be the same?
