Map

Earthworks forming hollows and ditches. (S1) in file considers these in historical context and suggests they are probably extraction pits but possibly for tanning or flax retting; they date to before the 1840s. (S2)
(S1) however does not include rectangular ponds shown in the woods to the north still present and also shown on (S2) suggesting the site was once larger.

January 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Earthwork hollows and pits of unknown or possibly post-medieval date are seen on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S2-S4). At TL 7576 9564 there is a high concentration of pits and hollows which have previously been suggested (see above) to have related to extraction, tanning or flax retting. The pits are situated on a ridge and the topography to the east is undulating which is most likely the result of geology rather than industrial activity. In the south of the area there are three larger pits or ponds and a bank which may have also related to the industrial activity or drainage. At TL 7598 9567 there is a fragmented bank aligned approximately northwest – southeast and may have related to industrial activity or possibly related to a former boundary. The pits are not visible on the Tithe map (S5), First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S6), or Second Edition Ordnance Survey map (S7).
The mapped extent of this site has been significantly extended to include the activity to the south [1].
J.Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 14 January 2019.
