Full Description
Broadacres is a typical mock tudor building, constructed around 1934 (S1) or 1935 [1]. Cartographic evidence confirms that the building was not present when the area was surveyed in 1927 (S2) and it was completed when revisions were surveyed in 1938 (S3). Unusually, the building incrporates a number of reclaimed element from older buildings, most notably two elaborately decorated clay chimney stacks which are believed to have come from Costessey Hall (NHER 7913) and would therefore date to the 16th century.
House of 1930; whether genuinely “mock-Tudor” as stated by (S1) or built in Tudor-style is not clear; the photograph shows thin studs and bracing that do not look structural, but it is stated that “fine beams” from Costessey Hall are incorporated (NHER 7913; not “Old” Costessey Hall as the text wrongly has it. The chimneys are stated to be of the same provenance; if this is correct then the beams and chimneys are late 16th century, but is there any confusion here with “Cossey ware” chimneys that were made up until the 20th century?
