Full Description
November-December 2007. Auger Survey.
The survey revealed laminated fluvial sands at the edge of a palaeochannel. The sands are interbedded with clay and peat deposits, which could indicate a possible tidal influence in the channel, braiding or complex channel migration (also see NHER 53739).
See report (S1) for further details.

June 2008. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of land to be affected by the Environment Agency's Burnham Overy Habitat Creation Scheme (Trench 2).
Two narrow linear features, a small pit, a broad ditch and a layer of potential road material were identified. The two linear features extended at right angles to one another. Reed stalks from the fill suggested they were placed to prevent the channel from collapsing. A fragment of worked oak that had been pierced by a single hole was recovered, and interpreted as part of the frame of a timber vessel. The fragment was too small to be dated. The pit was located along the western 'arm' of the linear feature. The fill included well-preserved reed stalks and tightly-packed animal bones. The proximity of the pit and the linear features implies a relationship between them.
A broad ditch, identified from aerial photography, crossed the path of the linear features at a right angle. It was filled with a high organic peat deposit. At the northern end of the trench a spread of chalk and flint fragments indicated the presence of a stone surface.
See report (S2) for further details.
