Map

June 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of water vole ditches (part of Environment Agency's Burnham Overy Habitat Creation Scheme).
Four construction cuts containing wood fragments were exposed in the northern ditch, including a well preserved box drain. The timber was pine, and had evidence of circular saw marks, providing a post-medieval date. A narrow supporting beam was also identified underneath the box drain. A meter to the west of the drain was an area of disturbed soil containing fragments of wood, and the suggestion of two post holes. Their position suggests they may have formed part of a sluice, but this remains unsubstantiated. Two ditches further south both yielded unidentifiable features, including a roughly built road visible in both diches and a possible drain in the southern ditch.
