Map

August 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of footings for extension and service trenches.
Fragments of masonary, consisting of irregular flints and fragments of red brick set in a lime mortar, were identified in an approximate east-west line along the line of one of the proposed footing trenches. A linear feature running south-west to north- east was identified in the base of the footings, and is likely to be a drainage channel. A well was uncovered at the front of the house, and was probably contemporary with the original eighteenth-century house.
A soakaway pit was excavated to the west of the house, and produced two sherds of pottery. Further pits to the rear of the building recovered Roman pottery and one clay pipe stem.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
