Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at the eastern end of this site in 2008 recorded no archaeological features or deposits. A geophysical survey of this field in 2021/2022 identified no responses of definite interest. A cluster of discrete anomalies in the north-west corner of the area examined and two adjacent linear anomalies may though represent archaeologically-significant remains. A watching brief maintained during further groundworks at this location in 2024 recorded only a possible ditch and a post-hole - neither of which produced any dating evidence. A small number of prehistoric finds were though recovered from topsoil an subsoil deposits.

Map

December 2007. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of site of proposed extension to electricity substation.
The site is located in a general area of archaeological interest, although no specific sites of interest are known to lie within the bounds of the development area.
See report (S1) for further details.
H. White, (NLA), 15 January 2010.

August 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of eight test pits.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S5).
P. Watkins (HES), 2 February 2023.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 81).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest.
The most notable responses were a cluster of fairly large strong discrete anomalies at approximately TG 2181 0268. These are though regarded as being of undetermined origin and are therefore not necessarily associated with archaeological-significant remains. The same is true of short slightly curvi-linear anomalies identified to the north-east and south-west of this group.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 February 2023.

April 2025. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of western extension to existing substation, including installation of temporary access road.
Only two archaeologically-significant features were observed in the stripped areas – a broad shallow north-west to south-east aligned ditch or agricultural furrow and an adjacent post-hole. Neither produced any dating evidence.
Unstratified finds included two Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery sherds and a small assemblage of worked flints, comprising a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knife and a blade and four flakes of less certain age.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 November 2025.
