1978. Survey.
The waterworks on Mundford Road opened in 1877 in response to concerns about sanitary conditions in Thetford. Water was drawn from a deep well at the site on Mundford Road and was lifted to a brick service reservoir which had a capacity of 220,000 gallons. By 1879 only 130 services had been connected, but in 1887 the Union Workhouse on Bury Road (NHER 1092) was supplied with water from the public supply for the first time. By 1895 the waterworks was supplying several manufacturers in the town including laundries and maltsters.
