Summary

An archaeological evaluation here in June 2008 revealed a buried garden soil dating to the 12th-13th centuries, which also contained large quantities of Late Saxon pottery, suggesting activity of this date in the immediate vicinity. Later in the medieval period a substantial brick wall was erected, probably as a property boundary. This was later demolished, and a new wall following a similar alignment was constructed in the 19th century.

Map

June 2008. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The single excavated trench provided evidence of intensive medieval and post medieval occupation in this area. The earliest feature was a garden soil, and pottery found within this deposit dated it to the 12th-13th centuries. However, a large amount of residual Late Saxon and Saxo-Norman pottery was also recovered, suggesting occupation of this period in the immediate vicinity. In the 13th to 15th centuries there was a build-up of possible clay floor surfaces, levelling deposits of mortar-rich material and the construction of a large east-west wall. This wall was found to be on the same alignment as the boundary between the two buildings of 67 and 69 Magdalen Street and was probably a property boundary. There was a notable lack of 13th-14th century pottery on this site. A similar lack of material of this date was noted in excavations at the corner of Magdalen Street and Cowgate in 1974 (NHER 168). The large wall appears to have been demolished, possibly in the 16th century, and a large amount of garden soil was imported. The plot was subdivided again, approximately along the line of the wall, as indicated by the robbed-out remains of a brick boundary wall probably dating from the 18th-19th centuries.
