Map

May 2008. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
The central belt of land in the parish of Loddon appears to have been particularly important for prehistoric, Roman and Early Saxon settlement. Some Roman settlement appears to have been situated further north, near the redevelopment site. There is a high possibility of Middle Saxon archaeological remains beneath part of the modern town, demonstrated by a middle saxon pin found in close proxemity to the current site. Evidence of surviving late Saxon archaeological deposits nearby is provided by the structure at No.1 High Street (NHER 35110).
Lack of archaeological evaluation in the town cetre means the nature and extent of archaeological deposits at this site are unknown.
See report (S1) for further details.

September 2008. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Single trench excavated.
Several mammal bones were recorded in the subsoil, relating to the land's previous use as a pig farm. A pit was located in the north-west corner of the trench, and contained no finds. The fill appeared to be the result of natural silting. A second pit was situated in the northern end of the trench, and the fill recorded five sherds of late saxon pottery and fragments of mammal bone. These deposits suggest that the pit was used to dispose of domestic rubbish.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
