Map

Field Survey, 29 June 2001.
Gardne of West Briggs Lodge (shown on (S1) as West Brygs (sic) and on (S2) as Tottenhill Rectory). Most remarkable feature depicted on (S1 - copy in file) and more faintly on (S2) is a circular earthwork, pierced on northeast by access leading to an offcentre building. The depiction resembles a Medieval ringwork but is surely far too small for such an origin. It is also very similar to gunpowder stores or cartridge manufactories which have protected earth banks around them - but what would such a building be doing in this location? Could it be a store for the Volunteer Movement? Or was some manufacturing process being carried on that involved the use of gunpowder? Yet no other buildings are shown adjacent apart from the main house (of 19th century date) and its outbuildings. Site has now been destroyed - disused asphalt tennis courts and patchy grass covers the location.
E. Rose (NLA), 29 June 2007
