Map

A small landscape park is shown surrounding West Tofts Rectory on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S1). The park includes a Lodge, a lake, wooded belts, Horseshoe Covert, West Tofts Church (HER 5156), a deserted village (HER 5149) and a medieval moat (HER 5148).
The lake, wooded belts and Horsehoe Covert survive (see (S2)), as does grassland in the north and east of the park (which includes the deserted village and a medieval moat). The southwestern part of the park is currently arable.
Faden's map of 1797 (S3) shows a much larger park than the 1st edition 6 inch map. This larger park includes the area shown on the 1st edition 6 inch map, as well as areas to the west, east and south. The outer boundary of this larger park is defined on the west, east and south by a tree belt called 'Tofts Belt'.
The area mapped is based on the park shown on the 1st edition 6 inch map.
D. Robertson (NLA), 9 September 2008.
